2024 Hair Color Trends: The Top 5

There is nothing better than fresh hair color and the 2024 trend forecast has something for absolutely everyone. But why wait?! Here at Wanderlux, we have compiled a list of the top five trending hues for 2024 so you are ahead of the rest (yes, pun intended) when it comes to your hair fashion.

Wanderlux Salon Hair Trends 2024 Cherry Cola Red; Cowboy Copper

2024 Hair Color Trend #1: Radiant Reds

You guessed it, Cowboy Copper is here to stay. These ‘if-auburn-and-copper-had-a-baby’ shades are predicted to be seen in full force for all of 2024. Cowboy Copper was a huge trend for Fall 2023 and we are excited to see it stick around in 2024.

As for why reds are staying so popular, Mauricio Bermudez, in an interview with Glamour, points out, “Red has been fully embraced as a standard color rather than trending color.”

One of the perks of using copper is that it is gentler on the hair. “Copper is a power pop that makes a statement while nourishing the hair,” Bermudez says. Other stand-out reds on the brink of going viral are Cherry Cola and Cherry Coke. These red tones range from deep burgundy to garnet red.

While reds pack a punch in the style department, they are also infamous for fading fast, as the red color molecule leaves our hair cuticle first when washing and heat styling.  Plan to wash hair with cool or warm water, tone between color appointments to keep reds fresh, and invest in color-preserving cleansing and styling products.

At Wanderlux Salon, our go-to is the Minu product family by Davines. This line intensifies color and keeps it brighter longer with naturally occurring amino acids that strengthen your color and hair structure.

Hair Color Trend #2: Fresh Takes on Lived-In Color

If you are among the many who love this mega-low maintenance look, rest assured that this trend is still going strong and gets an upgrade this winter with a palette of creative tones to help you express yourself.

From subtle, tawny baby lights to chestnut and auburn tones to the statement-making strawberry brown balayage, there is something for everyone.

The beauty of these tones is that they fade wonderfully and are easy to change up from appointment to appointment.

Kristyn Ellis, colorist and Wanderlux Salon manager says, “The technique of balayage is great when it comes to how quickly trends shift. This technique is meant to give a natural, sun-kissed result and you can achieve a wide array of looks with minimal maintenance.”

Hair Color Trend #3 Winter Blondes

Step aside, platinum princesses. Buttery, gooey, golden goodness is making an appearance next year and we are here for it!

While many blondes routinely choose a darker or “bronde” tone for winter, expect to see unique, runway-inspired colors like Mauve Blonde and Apricot Crush in 2024.

If you’d like to butter up your blonde without the funky color commitment, consider copper blonde. It is a classic tone that adds warmth without brassiness, (think Abigail Cowen and Jessica Chastain for inspiration).

Crucial for those who lighten their locks are heat-protecting products. We love the Melu Heat Shield and Love Smoothing Protector by Davines. Adding deep conditioning treatments to your routine is another good way to keep your hair healthy. We love Oi Conditioner by Davines.

Hair Color Trend #4: Vibrant Neons

Between the Barbie Movie and the Pantone color of the year, Viva Magenta, 2023 saw A LOT of pink hair.

Expect this vibrant trend to continue in a multitude of colors with neons packing a big punch in 2024. If you dare to be bold, this is for you.

One thing we always remind our clients when taking this bold step, is to remember it is a bold step for your pocketbook too. Vivids are a commitment as they are a double and sometimes triple process service. Meaning, you may visit the salon two to three times before getting the vibrant neon color of your dreams.

Wanderlux colorist, Kalee Mancilla McCue, who specializes in Vivids says, “Vivids are not for the faint of heart and require regular appointments.”

Additionally, “Pastel tones fade the fastest so I like to encourage my clients to lean towards more pigmented colors to get longevity out of their color. Embrace the fade-out! Fading ensures a cleaner canvas to try new colors next time!”

McCue goes on to point out there are things you can do to help preserve the color like avoiding hot water showers and opting for cooler temperatures. “Washing your hair in hot water will make your vivids fade faster, so remember, cold water washes and dry shampoo will be your best friends,” says McCue.

Hair Color Trend #5: Brownie Batter Brown

Brown hair is having a moment and rich cocoa and espresso are taking center stage. So many people want light hair, but an experienced colorist can help you choose a deeper shade to enhance your skin tone and eye color.

Think how amazing Hailey Bieber looked when she ditched her blonde balayage for a chocolate hue earlier this year. Expect to see this trend evolve and become more dimensional with subtle highlights and lowlights to enhance these yummy shades.

When going darker, it is important to use a conditioning color line that gives tons of shine. At Wanderlux, our current obsession is with Wella’s Shinefinity demi permanent glossing line. You will leave the salon with incredible shine and restored softness to your tresses.
