Self-Care: Why It Isn’t Selfish and The Science Behind It

Wanderlux Salon & Spa Self-Care

“Self-care” is getting all the buzz right now. Everywhere you look, people are talking about or sharing self-care and wellness tips. Everyone has a different opinion and different methods, and it can feel overwhelming to know where to go or what to do. All of this can also come across as over-indulgent or selfish.

However, self-care is incredibly important to total body health and we at Wanderlux are here to debunk the selfishness argument.  We believe in the importance of radical self-care that nourishes your body and mind and helps us all maintain a healthy balance in life.

Taking care of yourself is similar to ensuring you’re in good condition to navigate life’s journey and help others along the way. Think of self-care like maintaining a car. Regular check-ups and maintenance keep the vehicle running smoothly and even allow you to help the innocent bystander stranded on the side of the road sometimes.

When it comes to your mental health, self-care can help you manage stress, lower your risk of illness, and increase your energy. Even small acts of self-care in your daily life can have a big impact. -National Institute of Mental Health

Self-care involves nurturing yourself mentally, emotionally, and physically. The science behind it shows that combining internal and external practices is key for our long-term well-being.

This is where spa and salon treatments come in. Spa and salon treatments offer more than just external enhancements or pampering, they provide a holistic approach to self-care. When you are feeling and looking your best, you exude positive energy and this naturally rubs off on others.

This is why it’s important to make self-care part of your daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly routines. It allows you to focus on your health and well-being, both inside and out.

Here are a few of our favorite spa and salon offerings that have a positive effect on our brains, bodies, and spirit and enrich our lives and the lives of those around us.

CORTISOL AND CONFIDENCE

For many of us, the word cortisol triggers thoughts of stress and stubborn belly fat. (Eeeeek!) Other well-known functions of this hormone, located in the adrenal gland, are regulating our metabolism, reducing inflammation, and controlling our sleep-wake cycles, making it important we maintain healthy cortisol levels.

Additionally, cortisol is linked to our self-confidence. A boost in confidence from a fresh cut or color can actually lower cortisol levels, as confidence positively influences stress responses.

Science tells us that a confident mindset enhances the brain’s prefrontal cortex’s ability to modulate the stress response, making it easier to control our reactivity to daily stressors, which seems to be prevalent for many of us.

A fresh haircut, vibrant hair color,  or well-executed skincare routine can work wonders for our self-esteem. The physical transformation contributes to a positive body image, which fosters our sense of self-worth. Nothing selfish about that, in our opinion!

GLOW UP SCIENCE: THE RELAXING REALMS OF MASSAGE AND FACIALS

The tangible effects on our neurological state brought on by touch are quite fascinating. Scientifically speaking, massages don’t just knead out knots, they engage in a stress hormone showdown, showing cortisol the exit door.

If you are like me and have woken up drooling and woozy from a state of facial or massage zen, know that it is due to the sensory experience you just went through.

The power of massage stimulates our nerve endings, triggering the release of serotonin, the neurotransmitter associated with happiness and relaxation (yes, please). This not only reduces stress but can contribute to an improved mood.

Make it stand out

In one study, published by the National Library of Medicine, massage therapy resulted in decreased cortisol levels by 31% and increased serotonin levels by 28%, demonstrating the positive impact massage can have on the body.

Facials, like massages, engage sensory receptors in the skin. The soothing touch received during your service stimulates the nervous system, creating a sense of extreme calm.

Ever wondered about that post-facial glow? Science says it involves increased blood circulation, a surge in oxygen flow, and the enchanting touch of your favorite skincare elixirs. It’s like a bit of magic for your complexion.

Increased blood circulation from facial techniques stimulates cell turnover which prompts the production of fresh, collagen-rich skin cells. All of these factors contribute to a more youthful, resilient complexion. Here’s more on why you need to treat yourself to a spa facial

Another benefit of facial-induced blood circulation is that more oxygen reaches cells throughout the body, not just the face. Oxygen is like the superhero fuel for cells, aiding in their optimal function and promoting overall vitality. We love the Zenned Out stress relief facial and body treatment.

With a better oxygen supply, the brain gets its share of the goodness. This can enhance cognitive function, improving focus, concentration, and overall mental clarity. Not too shabby for a day at the spa!

REIKI HEALING: AN ENERGETIC EMBRACE FOR YOUR SOUL

Make it stand out

Now, let’s talk about Reiki, the gentle powerhouse of self-care services. Picture energy flowing through you like a lazy river on a sunny day. That is how some describe feeling during their reiki therapy sessions.

Reiki healing operates on the principle of channeling universal life force energy to promote balance and harmony within the recipient. Scientifically, this practice is often associated with the reduction of stress and the enhancement of overall well-being.

In fact, according to Science Direct, “Reiki has been found to activate the parasympathetic nervous system and therefore reduce cortisol levels, reducing the experience of neurophysiological stress or perceived stress.”

During a Reiki session, the practitioner acts as a conduit for the transfer of energy, gently placing their hands on or near specific energy points on the body. Studies show that Reiki may influence the autonomic nervous system, promoting relaxation and stress reduction.

The “energetic embrace” of Reiki is believed to facilitate a sense of calm, encouraging the body's natural ability to heal itself. For those with an open mind and heart to alternative healing modalities, the experience of Reiki itself is a testament to the profound impact on inner tranquility and healing benefits.

THE PHYSIOLOGY OF STRESS

When we encounter stress, whether from work, relationships, or other aspects of life, our bodies initiate the "fight or flight" response. This response triggers the release of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, preparing our bodies to confront or evade a perceived threat.

While this response is crucial for survival in acute situations, chronic stress can have detrimental effects. Prolonged elevation of stress hormones has been linked to various health issues, including cardiovascular diseases, weakened immune systems, and mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression.

This is why self-care is not selfish. Making time for ourselves whether through our regular hair appointments, massages, facials, or Reiki energy healing can have lingering effects that help us relax, unwind, and disconnect from the rush of everyday life.

Taking time to slow down and focus on ourselves is not indulgent or selfish it’s an act of love that extends beyond ourselves.

Take your self-care journey to the next level with a Wanderlux salon or spa experience and we’ll help you zen right out.
